| St. Philip’s is approached up a narrow lane which twists away from the Barmouth to Dolgellau road. Its appearance is a surprise and delight to many as its design was inspired by the Basque churches of South West France and is described by the writer Jan Morris as, “purest Pyrenean.” An open bell-cote containing four bells rung by a windlass system is of a style rare if not unique in Wales. The church was originally built as a private chapel and only became a parish church after a great deal of controversy involving a specific Act of Parliament. Today a small but dedicated congregation maintain the life and worship of this unusual but much-loved church. | |
